Family Support Worker (SEN Setting)

Job Description

We are currently seeking a dedicated and compassionate Family Support Worker to join our team at a Special Educational Needs (SEN) School. As a Family Support Worker, you will play a crucial role in providing support and assistance to families of children with special educational needs, ensuring that they receive the guidance and resources they need to help their children thrive.

Responsibilities:

  • Establish and maintain positive relationships with families of children with special educational needs, offering emotional support, guidance, and information on available resources.
  • Conduct initial assessments of families' needs and develop individualized support plans based on their unique circumstances.
  • Collaborate with school staff, including teachers, therapists, and administrators, to ensure a coordinated approach in supporting children and their families.
  • Provide practical support to families, such as helping them access relevant services, assisting with paperwork, and connecting them with external agencies and community resources.
  • Organize and facilitate support groups, workshops, and training sessions for families, focusing on topics related to special educational needs, behavior management, and coping strategies.
  • Act as a liaison between families, school staff, and external professionals, advocating for the needs and rights of the children and their families.
  • Monitor and evaluate the impact of support services provided, collecting feedback from families and using it to improve service delivery.
  • Maintain accurate and up-to-date records of interactions with families, ensuring confidentiality and adhering to data protection regulations.

Qualifications and Skills:

  • A relevant qualification in social work, counseling, psychology, or a related field is highly desirable.
  • Proven experience working with families and children with special educational needs, preferably within an educational or similar setting.
  • Knowledge of SEN legislation, policies, and procedures, including an understanding of the Education, Health and Care Plan (EHCP) process.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to build trusting relationships and provide empathetic support.
  • Excellent organizational and time management abilities, with the capacity to handle multiple tasks and prioritize effectively.
  • Familiarity with local community resources and support services available for families of children with special educational needs.
  • A compassionate and non-judgmental approach, combined with resilience and the ability to work effectively under pressure.
