Food Technology is considered to be a leading department within the school and always achieves impressive exam results across KS4 and 5. They enjoy custom built rooms, shared storage facilities and office space for marking and preparation.
The Department consists of several full time and part time members of staff and they are well supported by two dedicated Technicians. There are four specialist teaching rooms which have recently been refurbished to a high standard and offer interactive whiteboards. There are shared store cupboards which house a wide range of practical teaching resources and two quiet office areas for personal preparation and marking. Classes are restricted to a maximum of 21 students per class across all key stages.
The Department offers Food at Key Stages 3 to 5 and Textiles at Key Stages 3 and 4. Students in Years 7, 8 and 9 are taught Food and Textiles for one lesson per week, with 2 terms of Food and 1 term of Textiles being offered in each year group. Lessons focus on the development of practical skills with students being encouraged to use a range of tools and equipment independently in each area. Food and Child Development are very popular choices at KS4 and they usually run a small Textiles class at KS4 as well. They offer Edugas Food Preparation and Nutrition at KS4, the OCR Cambridge National Child Development qualification and AQA ART Textiles. At KS5 we offer the WJEC Applied General Diploma in Food Science and Nutrition.
