Job Title: Higher Level Teaching Assistant

Start Date: September 2024
Salary: £21,363 per annum

Main Purpose of the Role:

  • Collaborate with class teachers to enhance the learning and achievement of pupils.
  • Encourage pupils' independence, self-esteem, and social inclusion.
  • Provide support to pupils, individually or in groups, to help them access the curriculum, participate in learning activities, and experience success.

Key Responsibilities

Teaching and Learning:

  • Implement informed and efficient teaching and learning strategies to support teachers and boost the achievement of all pupils, including those with special educational needs and disabilities (SEND).
  • Promote inclusion by encouraging the participation of all pupils in learning and extracurricular activities.
  • Support the teaching of a broad and balanced curriculum aimed at helping pupils reach their full potential in all learning areas.
  • Consistently use effective behavior management strategies in line with school policy and procedures.
  • Assist class teachers in maintaining good order and discipline among pupils, managing behavior effectively to ensure a positive and safe learning environment.
  • Collaborate with teachers to organize and manage teaching spaces and resources to maintain a stimulating and safe learning environment.
  • Observe pupil performance and communicate observations to the class teacher.
  • Utilize ICT skills to enhance pupils' learning.
  • Undertake other relevant duties assigned by the class teacher.

Qualifications and Skills:

  • Ability to build positive relationships with staff, students, and parents.
  • Genuine interest in supporting student learning.
  • Ability to create a stimulating and inclusive learning environment.
  • Subject and curriculum knowledge relevant to the role, effectively applied in supporting teachers and pupils.
  • Knowledge of leading learning activities for groups or classes of children.
  • Understanding of supporting learners in accessing the curriculum per the SEND code of practice.
  • Resilient, positive, forward-looking, and enthusiastic about making a difference.
  • Capacity to inspire, motivate, and challenge children and young people.
  • Commitment to maintaining confidentiality at all times.
  • Good ICT skills, particularly in using ICT to support learning.

Responsibilities Include:

  • Cover and lead class teaching (under supervision) as necessary.
  • Support class teachers in planning and teaching 1:1 or small groups of children.

Working with Staff, Parents/Carers, and Relevant Professionals:

  • Communicate effectively with staff members, pupils, parents, and carers under the class teacher's direction.
  • Share knowledge and understanding of pupils with other school staff and professionals to aid informed decision-making on interventions and provisions.
  • Contribute to meetings with parents and carers by providing feedback on pupil progress, attainment, and learning barriers, as directed by teachers.
  • Keep other professionals accurately informed of pupil performance, progress, or concerns, in collaboration with the class teacher.
  • Work collaboratively with classroom teachers and colleagues, including specialist advisory teachers and other professionals within and beyond the school.
  • Develop effective professional relationships with colleagues.

Health and Safety:

  • Promote and ensure the safety and wellbeing of pupils, following the requirements of Keeping Children Safe in Education (KCSIE) and the school's child protection policy.

Professional Development:

  • Engage in professional development opportunities to enhance skills and knowledge.


  • Perform duties commensurate with the overall responsibility of the post.
  • Comply with and actively promote the school aims and ethos, and adhere to policies including Behavior for Learning, Equal Opportunities, Attendance, and Health & Safety.
  • Promote positive student conduct and address negative behavior appropriately.
  • Handle telephone and personal inquiries efficiently and effectively, promoting a positive image of the school.
  • Comply with the Staff Code of Conduct, including a smart dress code, and establish a professional environment that fosters excellent relationships and a positive ethos when interacting with students, staff, parents, and external contacts.
  • Undertake relevant training and development.
