Role Overview: We are seeking a dedicated and experienced Science Technician to join our team at a prestigious Secondary School in Reading. The successful candidate will play a pivotal role in supporting the Science department by providing technical assistance and ensuring the smooth running of practical science lessons.

Key Responsibilities:

  1. Prepare Equipment and Resources: Set up laboratory equipment and materials for science experiments and practical demonstrations according to lesson plans provided by teachers.

  2. Maintain Stock Levels: Monitor and manage inventory levels of chemicals, specimens, and other scientific supplies, ensuring adequate stock is maintained at all times.

  3. Health and Safety Compliance: Ensure compliance with health and safety regulations within the science department, including the safe storage and handling of hazardous materials.

  4. Equipment Maintenance: Carry out routine maintenance and calibration of laboratory equipment to ensure functionality and accuracy.

  5. Assist with Experiments: Provide assistance to teachers and students during practical science lessons, offering guidance on experimental procedures and techniques.

  6. Data Management: Collect and organize data from experiments, recording results accurately for analysis and reporting purposes.

  7. Support Departmental Projects: Collaborate with science teachers on departmental projects and initiatives, contributing technical expertise and practical assistance as required.

  8. Supervise Student Activities: Supervise students during laboratory sessions, ensuring adherence to safety protocols and providing guidance on proper laboratory techniques.

  9. Administrative Tasks: Undertake administrative tasks such as ordering supplies, maintaining records, and assisting with the organization of science-related events and trips.

Requirements:

  • Minimum of 6 months of previous experience working in a similar role within a UK educational setting.
  • Strong knowledge of health and safety regulations related to laboratory work.
  • Proficiency in handling scientific equipment and conducting basic laboratory procedures.
  • Excellent organizational skills with the ability to manage multiple tasks efficiently.
  • Effective communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to work collaboratively within a team environment.
