SEMH Assistant

Job Description

We are seeking a dedicated and compassionate SEMH (Social, Emotional, and Mental Health) Assistant to join our team in Bedford. As an SEMH Assistant, you will play a crucial role in supporting students with social, emotional, and mental health difficulties within an educational setting.

Responsibilities:

  • Provide one-on-one support to students with SEMH needs, both inside and outside the classroom.
  • Assist in implementing individualized strategies and interventions to promote emotional well-being and positive behavior.
  • Collaborate with teachers, parents/guardians, and other professionals to develop and implement personalized support plans.
  • Foster a safe and inclusive learning environment that encourages student engagement and participation.
  • Help students develop effective coping mechanisms and social skills through targeted interventions.
  • Monitor and record student progress, behaviors, and achievements, maintaining accurate records.
  • Support students during transition periods and assist with reintegration into the classroom after absences.
  • Implement appropriate behavior management techniques and provide de-escalation support when necessary.
  • Collaborate with the wider school community to promote awareness and understanding of SEMH issues.

Qualifications and Requirements:

  • Relevant experience working with individuals with SEMH needs, preferably in an educational or similar setting.
  • Strong understanding of social, emotional, and mental health difficulties and their impact on learning.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to build positive relationships with students, staff, and parents/guardians.
  • Empathetic and patient nature, with the ability to remain calm in challenging situations.
  • Knowledge of strategies and interventions for supporting individuals with SEMH needs.
  • Basic knowledge of child development and learning theories.
  • Ability to work effectively as part of a team and contribute to a collaborative working environment.
  • Flexibility and adaptability to meet the varying needs of students and the school environment.
  • Proficiency in maintaining accurate records and documentation.
